Digital Design Experiments

The Numerical Secret of My 1998 Calendar

In 1997, during my postgraduate studies in typography, I designed this calendar as a New Year’s card for my school. Through my research, I developed a minimalist numerical composition that allows for a rotatable design, adapting to the month and corresponding weekdays with the right cutout. While the number arrangement remains unchanged every year, the calendar cutouts need to be adjusted annually. However, calendar years repeat at specific intervals—for example, the 1998 calendar is valid again in 2026! This concept merges typography, modular design, and time cycles into one fascinating system.

Mood Animation

I created a short animation that highlights certain aspects of this specific calendar design and might spark interest in learning more (then see my explanation video above).

Here, I explain

the calendar system and how I came up with the number sequence.
